Sovana is a fraction of the municipality of Sorano, in the province of Grosseto.
It is known as an important Etruscan center, a medieval and Renaissance village, as well as an episcopal seat.
The church appears to be the oldest in the historic center and, according to some scholars, during the 6th century it was the first bishopric seat of the diocese: at that time the religious building was certainly named after another saint.
Tradition has it that the bishop of Palermo, Mamiliano, carried out evangelization work in Sovana at the beginning of the fourth century. This early conversion to Christianity earned Sovana the appointment, received in the fifth century, as a bishopric.
The foundation of the current building dates back to the 8th-9th century, and since then
The Tomb of the Siren or, according to the ancient definition "La Fontana", is part of the Sopraripa necropolis and dates back to between the end of the 3rd and 2nd century BC. The tomb owes its name to the female figure carved in the pediment, the presence of the double fish-like tail has identified it as a siren.
The Ildebranda Tomb was discovered in 1924 by one of the Rosi brothers, and since then carefully studied in detail by Ranuccio Bianchi-Bandinelli. Dating back to the III-II century. B.C. in its particularity it is considered the most important monument of the necropolis not only in Sova, but also in the whole of Etruria.
