A Historic Center of Great Value
Sovana boasts a long and fascinating history as an episcopal seat, with its church being the oldest in the historic center. It is said that Bishop Mamiliano of Palermo worked here in the early 4th century, contributing to the early Christianization of the region. Sovana officially became an episcopal seat in the 5th century due to its conversion to Christianity.
The Archaeological Wonders of Sovana
One of Sovana’s most fascinating sites is the Tomb of the Siren, located in the necropolis of Sopraripa, dating back to the 3rd-2nd century BC. The tomb is named after the female figure sculpted on the front, characterized by a double fish-like tail, identifying it as a siren.
The Ildebranda Tomb, discovered in 1924 and meticulously studied by Ranuccio Bianchi-Bandinelli, is another monument of great importance. Dating back to the 3rd-2nd century BC, the tomb is considered one of the most important monuments of the Etruscan necropolis, not only of Sovana but of all of Etruria.
